What is a Sensei?

What is a sensei? The Japanese word sensei literally means "one who has gone before". In terms of martial arts, a sensei is the one with more experience who can guide you along the path. A sensei knows what it is like to be a white belt where everything seems strange and awkward. As your sensei, I know what it was like to win and to lose, to win a trophy and to mess up completely. I’ve had my fair share of bumps and bruised. I have struggled through learning new kata and basics just like you. I also know that sharing this knowledge and experience with others is what a sensei is all about. It is this journey, this pursuit of knowledge, that is the most important virtue of karate practice and today is just one step on your journey and I humbly thank you for letting me be a part of it.
